Background of the Study

The quality of the relationship between oncology nurses and their patients plays a significant role in treatment outcomes. A strong, trusting relationship can improve patient adherence to treatment, reduce anxiety, and contribute to overall better health outcomes. This study seeks to explore the effect of oncology nurse-patient relationships on treatment outcomes at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State.

Statement of the Problem

While much attention is given to clinical treatments and procedures, the nurse-patient relationship is often overlooked in oncology care, despite its potential to influence treatment outcomes. In Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State, the strength of nurse-patient relationships may impact patient experiences and outcomes. This study aims to examine how the nature of oncology nurse-patient interactions influences cancer treatment success.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the quality of the oncology nurse-patient relationship at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of the nurse-patient relationship on cancer treatment outcomes, including adherence, symptom management, and emotional well-being.
  3. To identify strategies that oncology nurses use to build strong relationships with patients.

Research Questions

  1. How does the oncology nurse-patient relationship affect cancer treatment outcomes at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State?
  2. What aspects of the nurse-patient relationship (e.g., trust, empathy, communication) are most influential in improving treatment outcomes?
  3. How do strong nurse-patient relationships influence patient adherence to treatment and overall health outcomes?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Strong oncology nurse-patient relationships positively affect cancer treatment outcomes.
  2. The level of trust and empathy in the nurse-patient relationship correlates with improved treatment adherence and emotional well-being.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on oncology patients receiving care at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State. Limitations include the challenge of quantifying the subjective quality of the nurse-patient relationship and potential biases in patient reporting.
